Tesla Cybertruck makes its most recent appearance in Michigan

Image
The Tesla Cybertruck made its most recent public appearance this past weekend at the Michigan Formula SAE competition at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan. The 2022 Formula SAE competition at Michigan took place from the 18 to the 21 of May. “The Formula SAE competitions challenge teams of university undergraduate and graduate students to conceive, design, fabricate, develop and compete with small, formula-style vehicles. The competition is an engineering education competition,” the event’s website states. The engineering-based competition could be a hotspot for recruiting talented students across the world, and Tesla has regularly stated that it attempts to recruit top-tier talent. As the company continues to work to convince the brightest and youngest minds in engineering to join, Tesla had the perfect thing to incite some curiosity from competitors: the Cybertruck. Captured by r/TeslaMotors user u/DifferentLow4875, the Cybertruck was spotted rolling around t...

Elon Musk says Tesla will have self-driving cars without need for human driver this time next year

Image
Elon Musk told reporters in Brazil that Tesla will have self-driving cars without the need for human drivers behind the wheel for supervision or at all really around this time next year. It’s Musk’s latest timeline on Tesla’s full self-driving effort, but he has been wrong about those in the past. The Tesla CEO was in Brazil on Friday. The reason for the trip was a partnership with the local government to launch a program to connect Amazonian regions with SpaceX’s Starlink satellite-based internet, but he also reportedly talked about Tesla to local reporters. Musk said that Tesla will have self-driving cars without the need for people behind the wheel about a year from now – therefore, around May 2023. It’s obviously not the first time that Musk made this announcement. He has famously been claiming that Tesla will have 1 million robotaxis on the road by the end of the year since 2020. Recently, we reported that for this year, Musk chanced Tesla’s 1 million robotaxis by end of t...

Environmental groups look to halt Tesla’s battery plant permits at Gigafactory Texas

Environmentalists and activist groups are setting their sights on Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas. In a letter to Mayor Steve Adler, the groups called on the city to withhold permits for the electric vehicle maker, including Giga Texas’ dedicated battery cathode facility. The groups include East Austin-based group PODER, the Texas Anti-Poverty Project, and the Hornsby Bend Alliance, among others. In their letter, the groups claimed that the manufacturing process of batteries in the Giga Texas complex would require a substantial amount of water and chemicals. This could result in the formation of a hazardous waste stream, according to the groups. “Right now, Tesla is planning to build – in addition to their 4.2 million square foot car factory – a toxic battery cathode plant along the Colorado River, near neighborhoods that do not have access to satisfactory, affordable water, while the company is planning to receive vast amounts of water from the City of Austin for its industrial operatio...

Judge throws out TSLAQ lawsuit against Tesla, Elon Musk, and Model 3 owner

Federal Judge James Donato from California has formally dismissed a securities fraud and defamation lawsuit filed by a Tesla bear against CEO Elon Musk, Tesla, and a Model 3 owner. The order was filed on Thursday.  In the order, Judge Donato noted that the lawsuit filed by Tesla bear and TSLAQ member Aaron Greenspan had failed to make plausible legal claims. “The federal claims in the FAC are dismissed with prejudice. The state law claims are dismissed without prejudice on the declination of supplemental jurisdiction. The case is closed,” Judge Donato wrote.  The case against Musk, Tesla, and Model 3 owner Omar Qazi was initially filed in 2020. The lawsuit had a number of key claims, including allegations that Qazi defamed Greenspan in a series of posts on Twitter. The TSLAQ member also argued that the Model 3 owner’s posts on Twitter were part of a coordinated campaign that praised Tesla and attacked the company’s critics.  Greenspan also claimed that Qazi acted as ...

Competition looming, Tesla still dominates top 10 best-selling EVs in

Image
Posted on May 20, 2022 by Zachary Visconti The electric vehicle market in the U.S. is still fairly new, and Tesla has largely dominated that market since its inception. However, competition in the EV space is increasing as legacy automakers begin releasing their own zero-emission vehicles, and although Tesla still dominates the market, the automaker’s market share has gradually been decreasing over the past few years.  Above: Tesla models parked in a row (Source: EVANNEX) Tesla’s Model Y SUV and Model 3 sedan were the two top-selling vehicles in the U.S. in Q1 this year, according to a report from MarketWatch  (via KBB) . The news comes at a time when electric vehicles made up over 5 percent of total car sales for the first time ever, and as many legacy automakers are starting to see substantial sales of their first few EVs. Tesla sold 46,707 Model 3 units in the first quarter, and its sales of the Model 3 and Model Y combined made up an impressive 68 perc...

On Wednesday, May 18, The Alamo Regional Mobility Authority (RMA) board was briefed on more details about The Boring Company’s (TBC) proposed tunnel from the San Antonio International Airport to downtown. Bexar County Public Works director and county engineer Renee Green briefed the Alamo RMA board on The Boring Company tunnel project before the members went into executive session. Green’s presentation noted that 10 million out of 30 million people who visit the city pass through the San Antonio International Airport. As such, the San Antonio tunnel project is expected to generate a net revenue of up to $25 million per year, with fares between $10 to $12.  “These revenue projections would require, obviously, more detailed study for reasonableness and accuracy. That’s what the ridership and revenue study will tell us,” said Green. According to Green, all funding for the tunneling project would come from Elon Musk’s tunneling company. She emphasized that taxpayers would not spe...

Tesla crash that killed three in California probed by U.S. safety agency

A Tesla crash that killed three people in California earlier this month is now being probed by a U.S. government agency. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it would open a Special Crash Investigation (SCI), probing to find out more information on what potentially caused a three fatality crash involving a 2022 Tesla Model S. On May 12, a Model S sedan crashed into construction equipment in Newport Beach, California. Three people occupying the vehicle were killed, while three workers outside of the car were injured, according to police. The crash occurred at around 12:45 AM on Pacific Coast Highway. The Model S struck a curb and then slammed into the equipment, a report from the  Orange County Register stated. The accident was recently added to the NHTSA’s list of currently-opened SCI cases. Its two most recent now involve Tesla vehicles, and a majority of the 42 cases involve Tesla vehicles. Three have been dismissed as not involving Autopilot. Vol...

Tesla Vision’s maximum speed for Autosteer raised to 85mph

Tesla Vision’s maximum speed for Autosteer was raised to 85 mph. On May 15, Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla would increase the speed of Autopilot.  Tesla started delivering Model 3 and Model Y vehicles with Tesla Vision, its camera-based Autopilot system, in May 2021. Tesla Vision vehicles have been delivered to the North American market. The system relies entirely on cameras and neural net processing to run Autopilot and Tesla Full Self-Driving, along with some other active safety features.  When Tesla announced the transition to Tesla Vision, it also stated that some features would temporarily be limited or inactive, such as Autosteer. In January 2022, Autosteer’s maximum speed was limited to 80 mph. Elon Musk shared that Autopilot’s max speed will increase in over-the-air update 10.12.  Autosteer’s maximum speed increase hints that Tesla has become more confident in its camera-based system. During the All In Summit tech conference in Miami, Musk noted that Tesla p...

Image
Genesis Motor America announced the launch and start of sales for the GV60 all-electric vehicle earlier today in the United States. It is the company’s first electric vehicle. The small, crossover SUV is Genesis’s first attempt at an EV in a quickly expanding sector. Tech seemed to be a core focus of the GV60 project, as the automaker initially mentions a number of “world-first automotive features,” including Face Connect and a Cyrstal Sphere. These are innovative new features that will enable drivers to be more connected with their vehicle, Genesis said. Genesis GV60 Genesis GV60 Face Connect will lock and unlock vehicle doors without a key by facial recognition. A camera strategically positioned within the B-pillar will identify up to two different drivers and will automatically unlock or lock the doors when the recognized face either approaches or moves away from the vehicle. The accuracy of the facial recognition feature was a primary concern for engineers, so Gen...

Twitter loses all of its gains from the Elon Musk saga

Twitter stock (NYSE: TWTR) has lost all of the gains it once had during the peak of the Elon Musk acquisition saga, now trading at the same levels it did before the Tesla CEO disclosed a massive 9.1 percent ownership stake in the social media company. On April 1, 2022, Twitter shares closed at $39.31, and investors had no idea that the next several weeks would amount to unimaginable gains catalyzed by the CEO of the world’s leading electric vehicle company purchasing the stock. The following Monday, April 4, Musk disclosed his ownership stake in Twitter in a filing with the SEC, and shares went skyward. From April 4 to the final trading day of the month on the 29, Twitter shares rose 24.70 percent, basically all off of Musk’s ownership disclosure and eventual deal to purchase the platform for $44 billion, or $54.20 per share. Shares went to as high as $52.10 on April 25 when Twitter announced it would accept Musk’s offer. However, all good things come to an end and the hype of the...

Tesla halts Cybertruck orders in China and Europe

Tesla appears to have gained enough Cybertruck reservations to keep its hands full for the foreseeable future.  As indicated by recent observations from the Tesla community, the Cybertruck could no longer be ordered in areas such as Europe and China. The option to order the all-electric pickup truck still appears to be available for potential customers in North America.  Initial reports of the update to the Cybertruck’s order page in Europe were posted by Tesla driver and advocate @Tesla_Adri from Germany, who noted that the vehicle’s webpage now only gives the option to “Receive Updates” on the pickup truck. Previously, an option to “Order” was present on the Cybertruck’s pages in Europe and China.  This is not the first time that Tesla has updated the Cybertruck’s official webpage. In October last year, Tesla updated the Cybertruck’s page to remove powertrain options on the vehicle. This was done not long before Elon Musk announced on Twitter that Tesla would be ...

Elon Musk’s confidence in China is reciprocal

Posted on May 16, 2022 by Zachary Visconti COVID-19 forced many automakers and suppliers to shut down in China last month, and many of them are just beginning to ramp up production after the long break. That said, another production pause has taken place again. Nevertheless, amidst the surge in cases, Tesla was actually one of a handful of companies the city of Shanghai worked hard to help reopen — showing just how important to the city and to mainland China’s economy the automaker is. Above: Tesla CEO Elon Musk sits down with  Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang (Twitter: China Xinhua News ) Officials in Shanghai helped Tesla cart over 6,000 employees and supplier employees to their jobs to help the automaker re-open the factory following COVID-19 lockdowns, according to a CNBC report detailing a letter Tesla sent to authorities. Musk showed the President around SpaceX’s rocket production facility in Boca Chica for an hour. According to Indonesia’s President, he met with Elon Musk to discuss innovation and technology. The pair previously met at Giga Texas to discuss Tesla’s potential nickel investments in Indonesia.  People familiar with the matter told  Reuters  that Tesla representatives were in Indonesia last week to discuss a possible battery-related investment. Elon Musk seemed to confirm Tesla’s interest in Indonesia. In a statement, Musk noted that there was room for “partnerships in many things because Indonesia has a lot of potential.”

How Elon Musk plans to evaluate Twitter’s bot problem

In order to determine how many of Twitter’s user accounts could be automated, Tesla CEO and potential Twitter owner Elon Musk is carrying out his own statistics project to get a real answer. Musk, who put his $44 billion deal to acquire the social media platform on hold yesterday after questioning Twitter’s reports of a less than 5 percent bot concentration on its site, is using his own methods to get more realistic data. It is obvious he does not think Twitter’s data is very accurate, as he detailed in a Tweet on Friday. Elon Musk’s Twitter buyout deal “on hold” amid claims that less than 5% of users are spam/fake accounts “Twitter deal temporarily on hold pending details supporting calculation that spam/fake accounts do indeed represent less than 5% of users,” Musk said. He later confirmed he is still committed to the acquisition. To get an estimate that would give him more insight on the platform’s bot population, Musk said his team is carrying out an experiment that will l...

Growing EV charging network, Electrify America, expands kWh pricing to

Image
Posted on May 14, 2022 by Charles Morris Public charging operators, including Tesla’s Supercharger network, charge customers in one of two ways: by the minute, or by the unit of energy (the kilowatt-hour, or kWh) consumed. Above: A look at an Electrify America charging location in Washington (Source:  Electrify America)  Most agree that the per-kWh system is fairer, as it charges the customer for the energy that’s actually dispensed, and isn’t dependent on charging speed, over which the customer has no control. Per-minute pricing lives on in some areas, because of state laws that make it illegal for anyone other than a regulated utility to resell electricity, but the future trend toward kWh pricing is clear. Electrify America has been updating its pricing structure “to reflect the growing preference for kWh pricing,” and recently began charging by the kWh in Idaho, Indiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and South Carolina. EA now offers kWh pricing in 30 states and ...

Elon Musk’s Twitter buyout deal “on hold” amid claims that less than 5% of users are spam/fake accounts

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that his Twitter acquisition deal is “temporarily on hold,” at least until he receives details pertaining to the company’s spam or fake accounts. Twitter had indicated in a filing that spam or fake accounts comprise less than 5% of the platform’s monetizable daily active users.  “Twitter deal temporarily on hold pending details supporting calculation that spam/fake accounts do indeed represent less than 5% of users,” Musk wrote in a post on Twitter.  Twitter’s investors appear to have received the news of Musk’s buyout hold negatively. Since Musk posted his update, Twitter stock has dropped as much as 25%. As of writing, TWTR stock is trading down about 13% in Friday’s premarket. According to Twitter’s filing, its calculations on the platform’s spam or fake accounts were done through an internal review of a sample of accounts. The company also highlighted that the 5% it listed was an estimate and that the real number of fake or spam users...

Tesla Model Y is still China’s best-selling premium SUV despite 98% sales drop in April

The Tesla Model Y is still China’s best-selling premium SUV — even if it practically had zero sales in April.  Tesla China saw a 97.7% dip in sales last month, thanks to Giga Shanghai’s three-week shutdown. Tesla only sold 960 Model Ys in April, a 98% decline from the 39,730 that were sold in March.  But despite this, the Tesla Model Y’s performance from January to March was so strong that it was still enough to place the vehicle on top of China’s premium SUV rankings.  As per data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Tesla sold a total of 75,641 in the first four months of the year. That’s a rise of 246.5% year-over-year. In comparison, Tesla China sold a total of 22,829 Model Y from January to April 2021.  Following the Tesla Model Y is the Mercedes-Benz GLC, which took the place of China’s second-best-selling premium SUV in the first four months of the year. Its gap with the Model Y is substantial, however, as it sold only 53,946 units from Janua...

Elon Musk is looking to finance Twitter acquisition without loans backed by Tesla shares as price falls

Image
Elon Musk is reportedly looking to secure more equity for the acquisition of Twitter in order to proceed without billions of dollars worth of loans back by Tesla shares. It comes as Tesla’s share price has fallen to significantly. Last month, Twitter’s board officially accepted Elon Musk’s acquisition offer. It still needs to go to a shareholder’s vote and some details are still being figured out but in the meantime, Musk has proven that he has the funding ready for the transaction. However, it looks like he might be changing things up a bit. Ahead of the offer being accepted, Musk showed that he managed to secure $25.5 billion of fully committed debt and margin loan financing, most of which is backed by his stake in Tesla, and he is going to provide an additional $21.0 billion in equity himself, with money from previous sales of Tesla shares. Over the last few weeks, he revealed several partners proving over $8 billion in equity, including Tesla board member an...

Elon Musk looks to eliminate margin loans from funding for Twitter buyout

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is looking to eliminate margin loans by raising more equity and preferred financing for his $44 billion Twitter buyout. The termination of a margin loan, which is leveraged against shares of Tesla stock that are in his name, would be less risk for both Musk and lenders. According to  Bloomberg, who cited people with knowledge of the matter, Musk’s advisors, which include Morgan Stanley, have started to talk about as much as $6 billion in preferred equity financing from potential investors who could help eliminate the need for margin loans at all. Musk had $12.5 billion of the $44 billion price tag tied up in margin loans but was then halved during a massive $7.1 billion filing that showed he had equity commitments from several new investors. Among the largest with Larry Ellison’s $1 billion commitment, but Sequoia Capital, Qatar Holding and Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal also contributed to Musk’s funding round. bin Talal rolled his Twitter holdings into t...
