SpaceX completes 35th Falcon 9 launch in 33 weeks – Elon Musk - Elon Musk

Image
SpaceX has successfully launched the SES-22 communications satellite to a geostationary transfer orbit, ending the first half of 2022 with 27 orbital launches under its belt. Perhaps more importantly, SES-22 was also SpaceX’s 35th launch since its last multi-week launch hiatus, which ended 33 weeks ago. SpaceX, in other words, has just a third of the way to go to achieve a running average of one launch per week over a 12-month period – not CEO Elon Musk’s exact goal but equally impressive. After a one or two-day delay, Falcon 9 lifted off without issue from SpaceX’s Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS) LC-40 pad at 5:04 pm EDT. Flying for the second time, booster B1073 carried the SES-22 satellite, payload fairing, and a roughly 100-ton (~220,000 lb) Falcon upper stage most of the way out of Earth’s atmosphere before separating, navigating back to Earth, and landing aboard drone ship A Shortfall Of Gravitas (ASOG) some 666 kilometers (~413 mi) off the coast of Florida. Tesla Model S Plaid breaks 200 mph top speed for the first time – Elon Musk - Elon Musk

Image
A Tesla Model S Plaid that has been hacked to remove software limitations has reached a top speed of over 200 mph (and then some) for the very first time, delivering on Tesla’s promise. When Tesla first announced the Model S Plaid, its new top-performance flagship electric vehicle, the automaker promised a top speed of 200 mph (322 km/h). However, when it was first delivered last year, the vehicle “only” featured a top speed of 163 mph (262 km/h). Earlier this year, Tesla released a new ‘Track Mode’ for the Model S Plaid that pushed the top speed to 175 mph (282 km/h). As far as we know, this has been the fastest top speed a Tesla Model S Plaid or any Tesla vehicle has achieved to date. It’s not clear what is really preventing Tesla from enabling the promised 200 mph top speed. It could be the brakes, which Tesla is now offering to upgrade with a carbon ceramic kit for $20,000, or it could also be worries about the three motors or battery pack. What is now clear is that Tesla wasn...

New NHTSA chief pledges to scrutinize driver-assist systems like Tesla Autopilot – Elon Musk - Elon Musk

Steven Cliff, who was confirmed as the new head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last month, recently stated that the agency would be intensifying its efforts to understand the risks and benefits posed by automated driver-assist technologies like Tesla Autopilot. When Cliff joined the NHTSA, he was surprised to see that the agency did not have data on automated vehicle crashes. As a result of this, Cliff noted that he challenged the NHSTA to come up with a report. The initial data from these efforts was released recently, and it revealed that Tesla accounted for nearly 70% of reported crashes involving Level 2 driver-assist systems in the US. Vehicles with automated driver-assist systems were involved in almost 400 crashes from July 2021 to May 2022. While this may seem like a substantial number, however, it is but a small fraction of the accidents that happened on US roads last year. In 2021 alone, the NHTSA estimated that about 43,000 were killed on t...

Tesla uses its electric semi truck to deliver Superchargers to Laguna Seca racetrack – Elon Musk - Elon Musk

Image
One of the rare Tesla Semi electric trucks came out of hiding this week to deliver pre-assembled Superchargers to the Laguna Seca racetrack in California. With the Tesla Semi program being delayed by three years at this point, the automaker rarely publicly uses the electric semi-truck. The company only produced a handful of them at a facility in Nevada, and it has yet to bring it to volume production as it waits on higher volume availability of its 4680 battery cells. However, Tesla has always said that it would be its own best customer when it comes to the Tesla Semi, and it is already putting the few electric trucks it has to good use. We have seen the automaker use its Tesla Semi electric truck to deliver Model 3 vehicles to customers in the past. Now Tesla shared footage of using the electric truck to deliver pre-assembled Superchargers at the Laguna Seca racetrack in California: Earlier this year, we reported on Tesla using pre-fabricated Supercharger stations to accelerat...

Tesla Model Y welcomed by Kansas PD, expected to give cost savings – Elon Musk - Elon Musk

In a recent press release, the Leawood Police Department in Kansas announced that it had acquired a Tesla Model Y Long Range for its fleet. The vehicle would be used as one of the Leawood PD’s patrol cars. The Model Y has already been painted in the Leawood PD’s black and white colors. The department noted that they started looking into the idea of an all-electric patrol car last year after seeing dismal reviews of available hybrid patrol cars. Captain Kirt Yoder, the agency’s project manager, noted that Tesla Kansas had been quite helpful. “I ended up contacting about ten agencies from New York to California. Tesla-Kansas City was great. They were eager to help and answer all our questions,” he said. Apart from being a green vehicle, the Model Y is also expected to give the Leawood Police Department substantial cost savings. Over a year ago, a cost comparison already showed that the department’s Ford Explorer patrol SUV would cost about $4,500 per year to run. That was a time w...

Tesla lets go of hundreds of Autopilot data labelers as it closes San Mateo office – Elon Musk - Elon Musk

Image
Tesla has laid off about 200 people working at its San Mateo offices as it closes the location. Most of the employees were working as Autopilot data labelers – a critical project for Tesla to achieve self-driving capability. LinkedIn is flooding with posts from now former Tesla employees working at its San Mateo office after the automaker let them know yesterday that it would be shutting down the office and letting go of the employees there. For example, Marilyn Alvarez, a data annotation specialist at Tesla, posted: To all my fellow Tesla San Mateo folk, I just want to say I’m sorry for what has happened today. No one deserved this and it breaks my heart how many good people have lost their job today. I am so thankful for meeting you all, problem-solving, innovating, and adapting through this experience together. There is so much to be proud of that was done because of your hard work. You are all worthy, kind, and brilliant people who deserve the best. May better bigger opportuni...

Biden Administration details $700m in investments to boost EV charging infrastructure – Elon Musk - Elon Musk

The Biden Administration announced Tuesday that a few private companies had committed more than $700 million in investments to boost domestic production of more than 250,000 new electric vehicle chargers annually. According to the White House, this investment will create at least 2,000 well-paying jobs and make EV charging more accessible, affordable, and fair. The $700 in private investments will follow the $7.5 billion from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which aims to help the EV sector by adding more charging infrastructure throughout the country among many other things. The White House said that the most key investments come from Electrify America and Siemens, who announced an additional $450 million in investments today to help grow the infrastructure of ultra-fast chargers for EVs. While Electrify America’s investments will “support the rapid deployment of up to 10,000 ultra-fast chargers at 1,800 charging stations,” Siemens is currently on track to build on...

Tesla ramps up Gigafactory Texas to thousands of units per week, adds new Model Y version – Elon Musk - Elon Musk

Image
Tesla has managed to ramp up production at Gigafactory Texas to thousands of units per week, adding production of the Model Y Long Range on top of the Standard Range version. The automaker is being secretive about data on its production ramp at Gigafactory Texas. It is one of Tesla’s most important projects, as it invested billions of dollars in the giant factory, and it will not recoup that money until the plant reaches volume production. After slowly starting production of the Model Y late in 2021, Tesla has been gradually ramping up and started deliveries of Texas-built Model Y vehicles in April. The ramp up has been difficult as Tesla has been building the Model Ys at Gigafactory Texas with its new 4680 battery cell and structural battery pack, which have been the bottleneck. Tesla has been aiming to produce 10,000 vehicles per week at the factory by the end of the year. The current production rate of Gigafactory Texas has been unknown, but it was believed to be less than a ...

Tesla Autopilot workers confirm mass layoff in San Mateo office – Elon Musk - Elon Musk

Image
Tesla’s mass layoffs reached the Autopilot team in San Mateo. Autopilot workers have started posting the news on LinkedIn.  People familiar with the matter told  Bloomberg  that Tesla laid off about 200 Autopilot workers from its San Mateo office. San Mateo had around 350 employees before the recent layoffs. Tesla transferred some of the San Mateo staff to a nearby facility in previous weeks.  The Autopilot team in San Mateo worked on customer vehicle data, specifically data labeling, for Tesla’s autonomous driver assistance features. According to a source, most of the employees Tesla laid off were hourly workers from the Autopilot Team. Most of the San Mateo office staff were data annotation specialists who held hourly positions.  One data annotation specialist, Caesar Rosas, shared that he received the news of Tesla’s layoffs recently. He stated that almost everyone working at Tesla’s San Mateo branch was laid off, adding that he didn’t get to s...

VW CEO believes Tesla will be weakened by ramping up 3 Gigafactories simultaneously – Elon Musk - Elon Musk

Image
Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess said he believes that Tesla’s decision to ramp up 3 Gigafactories simultaneously will weaken the automaker and help VW catch up in the race to dominate the EV space. Tesla and the Volkswagen Group are widely recognized as the leaders in electrification, especially in their respective home markets of the United States and Europe. But, Tesla is still the clear leader with about twice the all-electric sales volume of Volkswagen last year. Some believe that is going to change and fast. Earlier this year, Diess said that VW can sell more electric cars than Tesla by 2025. And, Bloomberg recently came up with a report that claimed that the German automaker can actually take the lead by 2024. Diess commented on the situation during a new works meeting this week and said that he believes VW’s profits and subsiding chip shortage is going to allow the automaker to catch up to Tesla (via Reuters): This should allow the carmaker to narrow the Volkswagen-Tesla gap...

15,000 Tesla vehicles are already in the hands of Uber drivers through Hertz deal – Elon Musk - Elon Musk

Image
Uber announced that 15,000 Tesla vehicles are already in the hands of its drivers in more than 30 US cities through its deal with Hertz to expand access to electric vehicles. Last year, Hertz announced an important effort to electrify its fleet of rental cars, led by a massive purchase of 100,000 Tesla Model 3 vehicles to be delivered over the next year. Shortly after, Hertz announced that on top of adding Tesla vehicles to its rental fleet, the company also made a deal with Uber to offer its drivers access to the Tesla vehicles. 50,000 Tesla vehicles will be offered for rent to Uber drivers, and the company has an option for more if the program is successful. Today, Andrew Macdonald, Uber’s senior vice president of mobility and business operations, announced that already 15,000 Uber drivers have rented Tesla vehicles through the program: To date, more than 15,000 drivers have rented a Tesla through this program – and they’re making a real impact. Together they...

Tesla Giga Berlin to add a third shift by July 4 – Elon Musk - Elon Musk

The third shift of Tesla Giga Berlin employees will start work by July 4.  Currently, Tesla Gigafactory Berlin has two alternating shifts, starting at either 6:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. According to a Tesla employee, Giga Berlin will introduce a night shift from July 4 onwards, so the factory will be running 24 hours a day.  The Berlin factory recently started producing 1,000 Model Y vehicles per weed. Adding another shift of workers would significantly increase the factory’s production in the coming months. Tesla Giga Berlin is still actively hiring. Earlier this month, Elon Musk announced that Tesla would initiate a mass layoff, culling about 3% to 3.5% of the company’s salaried workforce. Giga Berlin workers were not affected by Tesla’s recent mass layoffs. Tesla’s factory in Germany currently employs around 5,000 employees, and the company plans to continue hiring hundreds more every month. Tesla aims to have 12,000 Giga Berlin workers by the end of 2022....

Tesla Megapacks are about to replace Hawaii’s last remaining coal plant – Elon Musk - Elon Musk

Image
Tesla Megapacks are on their way to Hawaii in order to create a giant new energy storage system that is about to replace the state’s last remaining coal power plant. Hawaii aims to reach 100% green energy by 2045 and already has the highest amount of solar capacity deployed per capita. However, in order to handle all that renewable energy, the state needs to balance it with energy storage capacity since the sun doesn’t always shine. Tesla has been deploying batteries in Hawaii for years in order to help toward that goal. The company works with Hawaiian Electric on giant new battery systems and on a virtual power plant using Powerwalls. Now the Tesla Megapacks are coming to Hawaii, and they will be used to retire the state’s last coal power plant. Once completed, the Kapolei Energy Storage facility (KES) will become one of the largest battery systems in the world with a capacity of 185 megawatts/565 megawatt-hours. It is a project in partnership with Plus P...

Tesla CarPlay workaround now supports browsers in each model – Elon Musk - Elon Musk

Image
Currently, Tesla cars do not support CarPlay, but by the beginning of the year, 9to5Mac reported a nice project called Tesla Android with CarPlay. Created by developer Michał Gapiński, this workaround to enable CarPlay on Tesla cars has now been updated to version 2022.25.1 with a ton of new features. In addition, it now supports all the cars the company has. In a YouTube video, Gapiński says this update makes it easier for first-time users to download the software to enable CarPlay on a Tesla. Not only that, but the new features include support to up to 60Hz refresh rate, DRM video playback, so Netflix now works on the car again, while adding an orientation lock to Apple Music, so it launches in landscape mode. The release notes show that Tesla Android with CarPlay now behaves normally when loaded in Drive or Reverse and there’s a simplification of the video stack that improves the stability of the Flutter app running in the Tesla Browser. You’ll also find: Audio from Android i...

Tesla cancels Model Y Performance deliveries in Germany over defects – Elon Musk - Elon Musk

Tesla Model Y Performance (MYP) reservation holders in Germany received notice that their deliveries were canceled or delayed due to defects in some vehicles.  Reservation holders from Germany started reporting Model Y Performance cancellations on Saturday, June 25, through the TFF Forum . Model Y Performance delivery cancellations began on Saturday. Tesla is expected to inform more reservation holders of delivery cancellations this week.  Some reservation holders claimed that Tesla Germany postponed their Model Y deliveries because of a “security-related defect” that could not be fixed through a software update. Others stated that Tesla canceled their delivery due to a defect in the drive units from China.  According to Tesla employees in Germany, only some Model Y vehicles are affected by the defects. A few MYP reservation holders have already received their cars. The defect does not seem to affect Model Y Long Range vehicles or deliveries. Tesla Giga Shanghai pro...
