Aston Martin teams up with BritishVolt to develop high-performance EV battery
Aston Martin has announced that it is moving forward in its journey of electrification after reaching an agreement with cell technology company BritishVolt to develop high-performance electric vehicle batteries.
Aston Martin and BritishVolt formalized the partnership in a memorandum of understanding, a press release from the luxury carmaker states. The collaboration will support Aston Martin’s plan to launch its first EV in 2025. BritishVolt, the UK’s leading investor in lithium-ion battery cell technologies, will help develop Aston Martin’s EV battery cells, supporting the company’s tradition of on-track performance, with range and fast-charging capabilities while manufacturing an efficient vehicle.
“This powerful collaboration combines Aston Martin’s 109 years of engineering mastery with the expertise of the rapidly growing UK technology business,” said Aston Martin CEO Tobias Morse. “Working closely with BritishVolt, I believe we can create new technologies to power benchmark-setting Aston Martin electric cars for ultra-luxury with the highest standards of high performance and sustainability. Will match our reputation.”
Aston Martin said the companies will jointly research, develop and industrialize battery packs, including bespoke modules and battery management systems. The automaker says it is currently developing alternatives to the internal combustion engine, with a battery partnership with BritishVolt as the next step in the process. It will launch the Valhalla mid-engine plug-in hybrid supercar in 2024. By 2026, every Aston Martin product line will have an electrified option, with its core portfolio being fully electrified by 2030. Aston Martin plans to take advantage of its close relationship with Mercedes. -Benz will help develop its electric powertrain.
“Complementing the close strategic relationship we have with our shareholder Mercedes-Benz AG, this partnership gives Aston Martin additional access to the technology and skills to broaden our electrification options,” said Morse. “We are proud to partner with a UK-based, low carbon battery manufacturer as part of our ambition to become a leading sustainable ultra-luxury business with a commitment to the Net-Zero standard, a science-based goal initiative.”
With the new strategic partnership with BritishVolt, Aston Martin hired 176 new engineers to assist in the full transition to electric powertrains in 2021. Bringing in experts in EV development, software and electrical systems to lead Aston Martin’s EV transition will only help the company maintain its brand’s legendary status. In this luxury, high-performance sector, Aston Martin will compete with Lamborghini and Ferrari, whose EV hopes are expected to combine ultra-luxurious vehicles with sustainably sourced powertrains.
