German officials and Elon Musk's speech at Tesla Giga Berlin's opening ceremony highlight a message of hope

The Tesla Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg may have seen its fair share of delays, but the facility was still completed quickly—at least compared to other high-profile projects in the area. This was a point highlighted by Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) during the opening ceremony of Giga Berlin, which was attended by Tesla CEO Elon Musk and several other government officials.

The large-scale electric vehicle factory finally entered operations after nearly two years of construction. According to Scholz, East Germany would particularly benefit from Giga Berlin’s presence in the region. Noting the time it took for the facility to be built and fully approved, the official said Giga Berlin proves that “Germany can be faster.” This is quite a valid point, given that the BER airport, which opened in 2020, faced a delay of nine years.

Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck said the official start of Model Y production at Giga Berlin is a special day for the region and for Germany as a whole. Brandenburg Minister-President Dietmar Vodke was on the same page, noting that Tesla has put Grünheide on the map, noting that a vehicle factory has been set up and running in the 861 days since its announcement.

“Personally, I am grateful to Elon Musk for locating a project like this here,” Vodke said, adding that he and Tesla CEO are in close contact over the creation of the Giga Berlin. The politician acknowledged that Tesla sometimes caused problems for Brandenburg, and that there were times when Brandenburg caused trouble for Tesla. Commenting further, Vodke said that he is relieved that vehicle production is commencing at Giga Berlin. “We look forward to a long and good time with Tesla,” he said.

The pace of construction of Giga Berlin is due to various factors. True to its reputation, Tesla moved quickly, using initial permits and building the facility without public funding. The company also gave up subsidies for Giga Berlin. It was too risky on Tesla’s part, but Elon Musk mentioned in his opening speech that the Giga Berlin is worth all the work. According to the CEO, Tesla will ensure that this facility becomes a matter of pride for the people of the region.

“I am incredibly excited to be handing over the first production cars from our team here at GIGA Berlin-Brandenburg. It is a great day for the factory, and I want to thank everyone who helped. Thank you very much You have really made a big difference. And for the community, Tesla will make sure it is a gem for the region, for Germany, for Europe, and for the world.

“Every vehicle that we build will be another step towards a sustainable energy future, and we will also do battery storage, so it will be very important for storing renewable energy. “So I want to be clear, because sometimes people are sad about the future or they think, ‘Will we solve sustainable energy?’ and ‘Maybe it’s a climate issue,’ ‘It’s too late’, or something like that. Tesla’s mass layoffs reached the Autopilot team in San Mateo. Autopilot workers have started posting the news on LinkedIn.  People familiar with the matter told  Bloomberg  that Tesla laid off about 200 Autopilot workers from its San Mateo office. San Mateo had around 350 employees before the recent layoffs.
