GMC Hummer EV recalled over faulty taillamp embedded software issue
Update: GMC has informed Teslarati That following the recall decision on March 3, 2022, the automaker’s representatives contacted customers with affected vehicles and made necessary arrangements to replace the taillamps on the Hummer EV. All 10 vehicles affected by the recall have been rectified in writing.
General Motors (GM) has decided to initiate a recall on issues surrounding the vehicle’s taillamps for the 2022 GMC Hummer EV. A safety recall report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the problem is linked to software embedded in the microcontroller of the Hummer EV’s taillamp assembly.
According to a description of the non-compliance outlined in NHTSA’s safety recall report, the affected Hummer EVs do not conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, which refers to regulations surrounding “lamps, reflective devices and related equipment”. Is. Software embedded in the taillamp can cause one or two of the Hummer EV’s taillights to either idle or partially illuminate.
In the event that the Hummer EV’s taillamp is idle, all component-related functions – such as brake lights, turn signals, backup lamps, side markers, clearance lamps and taillights – will eventually be disabled. Such a problem could potentially reduce the visibility of the vehicle or give false information to other drivers on the road, increasing the risk of accidents.
According to the chronology of the issue outlined in NHTSA’s Safety Recall Report, a GM employee reported on February 1, 2022 at the company’s Speak Up for Safety (SUFS) program about two field incidents involving Hummer EV units with faulty taillamps. presented. A product investigation was opened on February 11, 2022, and on March 3, GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) decided to conduct a non-compliance recall for the affected vehicles.
Interestingly, only ten Hummer EVs are expected to be affected by the taillamp recall. The automaker noted that it was aware of three field complaints about the issue so far, which it received from January 8, 2022 to February 7, 2022. The company noted that till date no accident has been linked to the taillamp recall of the Hummer EV.
To resolve an embedded software issue in affected Hummer EV units, GM dealers will inspect and replace the left and/or right rear taillamp assemblies of a fully electric vehicle. These replacement taillamp assemblies feature software embedded right into their microcontrollers, which should resolve taillamp problems.
It should be noted that GM’s assembly plant began containment efforts for the issue of the Hummer EV on February 9, 2022. As such, Hummer EV units with manufacturing dates after January 20, 2022 were already built with taillamp assemblies that have corrected software.
