Hertz's Tesla order for 100k vehicles includes Model Ys, to be available at the end of April

Hertz Global Holdings Confirmed Teslarati Today its orders for 100,000 Tesla vehicles in late 2021 included Model Y builds, not just Model 3s, as was initially reported. Hertz also said that the Model YS will be available in select regions at the end of April.

In October 2021, Hertz ordered 100,000 Tesla vehicles. Originally, the Model 3 sedan was supposed to be the only vehicle included in the deal, which was contractually binding. CEO Elon Musk clarified after Hertz’s order announcement that there was no clear deal between Tesla and the rental company, that Hertz had purchased the vehicles at price, and that they would not receive preferential treatment due to the size of their orders.

“There is far more demand for Tesla than it is producing, so we will see Hertz only sell cars for the same margin that they have to consumers,” Musk said in November. “The Hertz deal has zero impact on our economics.”

Hertz on Wednesday formally added the Model Y to its rental line of electric vehicles. While customers can click the “Book” button on Hertz’s website, the Model Y is not currently available to rent through Hertz. The company told us in a statement earlier today:

“The Model Ys will be available to rent in late April in select markets where EVs are available.”

Currently, Model 3s are available at various airports across the country, including Washington’s Dulles, Florida’s Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Orlando International Airports, California’s Los Angeles and San Francisco International Airports, and Georgia’s Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport. Are included.

Hertz told us that the Model Ys were included in the original order for 100,000 vehicles, which did not include the Model 3 sedans entirely. “These are part of the original order, not incremental,” a Hertz spokesperson told us.

The deal for 100,000 Tesla vehicles was worth $4.2 billion. Hertz said additional details about the Model Y fleet are due to be released in the coming weeks.
