Pirelli unveils its first replacement tires for electric vehicles: All Season Plus with Elect marking

Italian tire maker Pirelli today announced the launch of its first replacement tire for electric vehicles in North America: the P Zero All Season Plus with elect marking.

The elect markings on Pirelli tires point to a number of different advantages. First, the tire has a low rolling resistance, which increases the driving range and reduces energy consumption, allowing the electric vehicle to stop on the charger less frequently. When coupled with a higher-end vehicle such as the Lucid Air Dream Edition or Tesla Model S all-wheel drive, the Pirelli Elect series reduces road connectivity, making the vehicles more efficient. When non-Election P Zero All Season Plus tires are fitted to vehicles, the Pirelli product has shown a 15 percent reduction in rolling resistance, translating into a direct improvement in EV battery life cycle.

One of the most important and distinctive benefits is road noise reduction as well, which provides for a more peaceful experience in the cabin of the EV. In electric vehicles, road noise is more noticeable because the lack of a faster combustion engine, which in a gas-powered car drowns out these noises, provides more noise within the cabin. This was Tesla’s main focus for many years, as many consumers said that road noise had dropped to almost unbearable levels. Tesla eventually worked with tire manufacturers for insulated rubber and made changes to its manufacturing processes to reduce some complaints of cabin noise.

Road noise won’t be a concern for those using the Pirelli All Season Plus, as it has the company’s PNCS, or “Pirelli Noise Canceling System.” Pirelli developed this technology to reduce interior noise thanks to a sound-absorbing material applied to the inside of the perimeter wall. It offers better driving comfort, which is another feature appreciated by EV drivers. The PNCS equipped tires have shown a 5 per cent reduction in cabin noise as compared to the leading OEM competitor.

Another incredible benefit of Pirelli’s Elect tires is the instant grip it provides for EVs to help support the notoriously fast acceleration of the electric powertrain. With traction control and launch grip advantages, the Pirelli tires support the weight of the battery-powered vehicle, the company said.

Pirelli continues to develop new tires and technology for EVs, especially as the automotive industry continues to show a massive transition to more sustainable powertrains. Pirelli was the first tire manufacturer to use a dedicated technology for EVs. It also has the highest number of homologation of tires for electric vehicles.

“You don’t need many considerations when working with internal combustion engines to develop tires specifically for electric vehicles,” said Ian Coke, chief technical officer for Pirelli North America. “Electric vehicles are heavier, have more powerful and faster acceleration off the line, and require less rolling resistance.”

Pirelli has developed a new compound formulation that increases the tire’s frictional resistance, compensating for the higher torque and increased weight, which both EVs have. The tire is built to offer “long-lasting performance in all conditions,” the company said.

The new P Zero All Season Plus Elect will fit some of the most popular EV high-performance models and will be available from 18 to 20 inches. Apart from the obvious EV vehicle benefits, the new P Zero All Season Plus Elect comes with a limited treadwear warranty of 50,000 miles.
