Tesla extends Giga Shanghai shutdown due to staff shortage amid lockdown

Tesla is expanding its production shutdown at its most productive factory, the Gigafactory in Shanghai, as it struggles to secure its workforce amid a citywide lockdown to limit the spread of COVID-19.

As we reported earlier this week, Tesla had to halt production at the Gigafactory Shanghai as the city is shutting down due to a surge in COVID-19 cases.

The automaker had planned to restart production on Friday, but those plans have now been delayed.

Reuters says it has obtained an internal memo confirming that the resumption of production is being delayed:

Tesla has canceled plans to resume production at its Shanghai factory on Friday and Saturday, an internal notice seen by Reuters, further delaying the reopening of manufacturing centers for its Model 3 and Model Y cars. Has been doing.”

The city where the factory is located is being locked down tomorrow morning, but the other side is starting to lock up at the same time.

Tesla thought it might resume production at that time, but now believes it will not have enough employees to successfully resume production as some of them will be affected by the second phase of the lockdown.

Based on estimated production rates at the Gigafactory Shanghai, Tesla could be short of about 2,000 vehicles per day when the factory closes.

It falls during the last days of the quarter, and Tesla is expected to release its Q1 2022 delivery and production numbers during the weekend.

Last quarter, Tesla announced record production and delivery of more than 305,000 vehicles.

The first quarter of the year has traditionally been a slow one, especially since Gigafactory Shanghai has become Tesla’s most productive factory and the quarter marks the start of the Chinese New Year.

But the quarter could be particularly short as not one but two factories closed due to COVID-19 restrictions.

We should have a better idea of the impact over the next few days as Tesla releases its Q1 2022 results.
