Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai halts operations this week amid COVID outbreak: Report
Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai will suspend its operations for at least one day this week as the city ramps up its efforts to combat a new wave of COVID-19 infections. People familiar with the matter shared the information.
Individuals who opted to remain anonymous because they were reportedly not authorized to speak publicly reported bloomberg that production at GIGA Shanghai will remain suspended on Monday. Tesla reportedly hasn’t informed its employees whether the suspension will last only one day or that it will be extended.
Tesla has not issued any reaction to news of the Gigafactory Shanghai closure this week.
The shutdown this week serves as the second stop in Giga Shanghai’s operations this month. Earlier this month the facility halted its vehicle production operations as China further tightened its COVID restrictions. The facility was closed for two days, largely spent testing workers at the electric vehicle production facility.
Last Sunday, the Shanghai government announced it plans to lock down the city in two phases. The first phase will involve a lockdown of 11 million people, and will run from Monday to Thursday. The second phase, which is expected to affect 14 million residents, will begin on Friday and last for four days. The Gigafactory is located in an area of the city of Shanghai, where there will be a lockdown from Monday to Thursday.
Non-essential workers will work from home and public transport services will be suspended. Rejected vehicles will also not be allowed to travel on public roads. “The public is called upon to support, understand and cooperate with the city’s epidemic prevention and control work, and to participate in the nucleic acid testing in a systematic manner,” the government said.
China is currently dealing with its worst Covid outbreak in two years as the country deals with the effects of the Omicron edition. Shanghai has been battling the virus for the better part of a month, and this Saturday, it reported the highest number of infections in the country since the initial Covid outbreak.
The stoppage of Gigafactory Shanghai operations will affect Tesla’s vehicle production this first quarter. Giga Shanghai currently plays a major role in Tesla’s operations, which serves as a vehicle export hub and produced nearly half of the company’s production last year. So far, Tesla operates only three vehicle production facilities worldwide, as the Fremont factory in California, the Gigafactory Shanghai in China, and the Giga Berlin-Brandenburg in Germany.
