Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai output keeps incredible momentum amid rumors of second factory

Tesla’s February numbers in China are out and confirm that Gigafactory Shanghai is maintaining an incredible production of more than 600,000 electric vehicles per year.

With upcoming improvements, Tesla could soon increase production to more than 1 million units per year and possibly up to 2 million units with a rumored second factory in Shanghai.

The China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) released its numbers early Tuesday and showed Tesla sold 56,515 domestic vehicles in China in February.

Of those vehicles, 33,315 were exported to other markets.

Gigafactory Shanghai has become Tesla’s export hub, and at the beginning of the quarter – in this case, October and November – the automaker produced vehicles for international markets, particularly Europe and Asia, and later in the quarter the Chinese market. Tesla’s overall production is down about 5% month-on-month in February, but that’s to be expected as the Chinese New Year usually hits performance through February.

Year-to-date, Tesla is up more than 200% in China.

At over 56,000 units, it shows that the Tesla Gigafactory in Shanghai is at an annual production rate of over 600,000 vehicles.

Tesla previously talked about eventually achieving production of 1 million vehicles at the factory.

But on top of that, a new report emerged last week claiming Tesla is starting work on a new factory adjacent to the Gigafactory Shanghai to double its production capacity to two million cars annually.

While still only a rumour, Tesla China has not commented on the news despite other reports of upcoming new factories closing in China.

Demand for electric cars has skyrocketed in China and many other markets – resulting in a competition to deploy EV production rather than focus on sales.

In China, sales of passenger vehicles rose 4.7% year-on-year to 1.27 million units in February, and electric vehicles, or new-energy vehicles (NEVs) as they call them in China, accounted for the increase.

NEV deliveries rose 180% to 272,000 units. Tesla’s 200% growth helped, but in terms of overall volume, BYD shipped 87,473 vehicles last month — though that number includes both hybrid and all-electric vehicles.
