Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai production pause extended till April 2: Report
It appears that the Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai will reopen a little later than initially expected. Giga Shanghai is now looking to return to operations on April 2, a day later than the company’s previous target, reportedly according to an internal notice from the electric vehicle maker.
Earlier this week, reports emerged that Giga Shanghai would suspend its operations from Monday to Thursday amid the city’s two-phase lockdown. Shanghai is currently battling the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, and the city has launched a series of vocal programs to curb the spread of the virus.
Tesla’s electric vehicle factory is located in Pudong district, east of the city’s Huangpu River. In line with Shanghai’s existing anti-Covid measures, the lockdown in districts east of the river was expected to lift on April 1. Thus, expectations were high that facilities located in an area such as Gigafactory Shanghai would resume operations on the same day.
As per an internal notice received by ReutersHowever, Tesla is now looking to resume operations at the Gigafactory Shanghai on April 2 instead. Two persons reportedly familiar with the matter said the electric vehicle maker had not obtained a permit from the Shanghai government for its trucks to transport vehicles to the western parts of the city outside Pudong district.
Following Shanghai’s two-stage lockdown plan, areas west of the Huangpu River are expected to remain closed from the early hours of April 1 until Monday, April 4.
The Tesla Gigafactory is playing a big role in the operations of the Shanghai electric vehicle maker. Over the past year, the facility has effectively become Tesla’s vehicle export hub, supplying the Model 3 and Model Y to regions such as Europe and Asia. Reports also emerged that Tesla Giga will build a new plant closer to Shanghai, which should allow the company to produce about 2 million vehicles per year.
