Tesla preparing to launch Model Y with 279-mile range
According to a new filing with the EPA, Tesla is preparing to launch a new version of the Model Y with a range of 279 miles and an AWD powertrain.
Could it be the new Model Y with 4680 cells and battery pack made in Gigafactory Texas?
The EPA has issued a rating on a new version of the Model Y.
Officially, Tesla currently sells only two versions of the electric SUV:
- Model Y Long Range AWD with a range of 330 miles and $60,000 . Starting from
- Model Y with a range of 303 miles and a $65,000 . starts with
The EPA lists another variant, the Model Y Standard Range RWD, which Tesla briefly introduced last year, when CEO Elon Musk said he was not satisfied with the range.
Now the EPA has added another version of the Tesla Model Y to its list of 2022 models, and it’s an interesting one, especially with the imminent launch of the Model Y made at the Gigafactory Texas.
The new Model Y is listed on the EPA’s website as ‘2022 Tesla Model Y AWD’:

As you can see, it’s listed with an EPA-rated range of 279 miles on a single charge — significantly less than the current Model Y Long Range AWD at 330 miles of range.
Therefore, it appears to be a dual motor powertrain Model Y with a smaller and slightly more efficient battery pack.
While this cannot be confirmed yet, the leading theory due at the time is that it could be the new Model Y that the Tesla Gigafactory is starting to build in Berlin.
This new version of the electric SUV is going to be equipped with Tesla’s own 4680 battery cell and new structural battery pack. These changes are expected to affect the specifications, so either Tesla tries to match them to the existing versions or introduces a different one, which may be the case with this new Model Y AWD.
We expect to get more details once Tesla begins deliveries from Gigafactory Texas, which is expected by the end of the month.
