Tesla will soon open Supercharger network to all EV owners in the UK, government official says

Tesla is “within weeks or months” to open up its Supercharger network to all electric vehicle owners in the United Kingdom, rather than just Tesla owners, according to the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport.

For the past year, we at Tesla have been ramping up our effort to open up the Supercharger network, a broader global network of fast-charging stations, to electric vehicles from other automakers.

In November 2021, we saw Tesla take the first step in that direction with a pilot program running at 10 Supercharger stations in the Netherlands where non-Tesla EV owners can charge using the Tesla app.

When announcing the new pilot program, Tesla said it planned to expand it gradually as it tests the user experience on the network for new non-Tesla EV owners and current Tesla owners who use those charging stations. Going to see more traffic. ,

In January, the automaker announced that the program was expanding to more stations in Norway and France.

Last month, Tesla expanded access to the Supercharger network to all-electric cars at all stations in the Netherlands — not just some.

Things have been stable over the past month as Tesla has been collecting more data on how adding more users to the network is affecting it, but more markets are expected to be added soon.

Now UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport Trudy Harrison says Tesla is soon going to open its Supercharger network in the UK.

She said in an interview with Electrifying.com:

Speaking to Electrifying.com founder and CEO Ginny Buckley earlier this week, Transportation Minister Trudy Harrison confirmed the move, saying: “Tesla recognizes that they are part of the solution here” and that the move will take “for weeks and more”. instead of months”. years”.

The government official didn’t say how she knew about the timing, but it’s possible Tesla may have approached the government about expanding the program.

The same thing happened with the Ministry of Transport in Norway when Tesla opened Supercharger stations to other EV owners in the country.

The UK has seen an increase in sales of electric vehicles over the past year, with Tesla leading the way.

Tesla said it plans to use revenue from other EV owners using the network to expand it with more stations.
