Tesla Wins Large Order Of 200 MW Megapack For A New Energy Storage Project In Australia
Queensland state and publicly owned generator CS Energy announced a massive new 100 MW/200 MW energy storage project, and selected Tesla’s Megapack to power it.
Australia has proven to be a very important market for Tesla’s energy storage business.
Its flagship Tesla Big Battery project in South Australia became the first of its kind and provided vital services to help stabilize the local grid, which the brownout is known for.
The project influenced dozens of other large utility-scale energy storage projects using Li-ion batteries.
Tesla won many of those projects, especially since the launch of the Megapack, which gears up for large-scale energy storage projects.
Now the company is adding another to the list as Queensland announced that it will be building a new 100 MW/200 MW energy storage system in Chinchilla, a city a few hours outside Brisbane, and it selected the Tesla Megapack for the project:
West Downs’ role as an important part of Queensland’s renewable energy revolution marks another important step forward. Public-owned generator CS Energy will install a grid-scale battery near chinchillas to deliver clean, affordable and reliable energy to Queenslanders. The 100 MW/200 MWh battery will be made from a Tesla Megapack and will form part of CS Energy’s energy center in Coogan Creek. Treasurer and Minister of Trade and Investment Cameron Dick said the $150 million project was expected to create 80 jobs during construction and up to 10 jobs during operations.
The new battery system is expected to enable the state to make better use of its renewable energy and stabilize the grid.
Mick de Braine, Minister of Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen, commented on the announcement:
The battery represents the further diversification of energy and modernization of Queensland’s publicly owned power companies. Queenslanders want clean energy, but they also want reliable energy, so the inclusion of batteries in the CS Energy portfolio will support the further expansion of their convertible (renewable) energy assets alongside existing conventional generation. The Palaszczuk government is moving quickly to invest in storage solutions that enable the continued uptake of renewable energy, particularly rooftop solar, so more Queenslanders can enjoy the savings.
Megapack is expected to be installed and operational by the end of next year.
The new project follows Tesla just last week securing a 300-megapack megapack order for three other energy storage projects in the neighboring state of New South Wales.
