Volkswagen delays ID.5 launch in Germany due to partial shortage from Ukraine

Volkswagen is delaying the launch of the all-electric ID.5 by a month because a supply disruption has not resulted in a required part from a Ukrainian supplier.

According to a letter seen by a German media outlet, a lack of the part, which is a wire harness, prevented Volkswagen from producing enough exhibition and performance vehicles for its sales partners. automobilwoche,

“To ensure that all partners are treated equally, vehicles that are already at destination stations are yet to be delivered,” according to the letter, which the site published (via From) Reuters) “To ensure nationwide availability of vehicles for every agent, we will partially redistribute exhibition vehicles.”

Volkswagen unveiled the ID.5 at the IAA Munich Motor Show in Germany in mid-September. The ID.5 is Volkswagen’s first SUV coupe that will use the Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB), the platform the German automaker uses for its new electric cars.

Production of ID.5 began at the end of January. The ID.5 is made at Volkswagen’s Zwickau plant, which was recently converted from an ICE production facility into an EV manufacturing plant as Volkswagen continues to transition to a fully electric lineup. However, Volkswagen will have to wait for more wire harnesses from its suppliers in Ukraine before it can start shipping more models to dealerships. Production was recently halted after the supply chain was affected by the war between Russia and Ukraine due to supply constraints. Volkswagen is expected to start production next week.

The wire shortage problem can be solved soon. Earlier this week, VW’s koda Auto said that its supplier partner in Ukraine has decided to resume production of wire harnesses. A Skoda official said in a recent 2021 earnings call, “Our partner in Ukraine has this week decided to resume wire harness production, with full service and complete safety for the employees there. ” Volkswagen may use the same supplier, although this has not been confirmed.
