Volvo teams up with Starbucks to set up EV charging network in US locations

Volvo Cars USA and Starbucks are partnering to set up the first public electric vehicle charging network in several US locations earlier this summer. The charging stations, operated by ChargePoint, will be installed in up to 15 stores along a 1,350-mile corridor from Seattle to Denver.

At 15 locations, 60 Volvo-branded DC fast chargers supplied by ChargePoint will be placed at various Starbucks locations along the 1,350-mile route from the company headquarters in Seattle to Denver, Colorado. Charging locations will be separated by about 100 miles, which is an ideal distance for even the shortest-range EVs on the market.

DC fast chargers will give customers the opportunity to extra charge their car and themselves with electrodes and caffeine. Extending the charging network infrastructure to retail locations, especially quick stops like a coffee shop, helps EV drivers gain a few extra miles as well. ChargePoint’s DC fast chargers will deliver Volvo’s C40 recharge from 20 percent state charge to 90 percent in just 40 minutes. That’s plenty of time to return to your fully charged car, to order coffee and enjoy it.

Any electric vehicle will be able to use the ChargePoint DC fast charger, but only Volvo’s vehicles will charge for free, a Volvo press release said.

Volvo Recharge models with Google Embedded can use the ChargePoint app to locate and access Starbucks-located charging stations along the route. The ChargePoint app is integrated into the in-dash system of Volvo Recharge models.

The installation of new EV chargers is expected to be finished by the end of 2022. Places are positioned to recharge themselves in a range of familiar, reliable, clean and safe places for a stress-free journey between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Northwest. and their battery-powered vehicles, Volvo said.

“Volvo Cars wants to give people the freedom to move and reduce their impact on the environment,” said Anders Gustafsson, Senior Vice President America and President and CEO of Volvo USA. “By working with Starbucks we can do this to give their cars a pleasant place to rest while they recharge.”

While Volvo plans to go fully electric by 2030, Starbucks said in a press release that it also plans to lead the retail industry in decarbonization solutions, including EV charging stations and onsite solar at stores. Starbucks plans to expand its solar pilot program to an additional 55 locations this year.
